Why Disposable Diapers Work Well for Your Baby Compared to Cloth Ones

diapers

Parenting is a skill and an art. Apart from taking care of your baby physically and emotionally, it’s equally important to pick the best baby care products, the most important one being diapers.

Most babies require diapers for 2-3 years, and during infancy, the average baby needs 12 diapers a day. If we consider 8 diapers in a day for the calculations, then that’s 2,920 diapers each year and 7,300 total diapers for 2.5 years.

These numbers show that diapers will dig a hole in your pocket. But when it comes to your babies, consider diapers an investment and not an expense.

As a parent, it’s common to debate over which type of diaper is best for your bundle of joy – cloth or disposable. We believe that disposable diapers work better than others for a number of reasons.

In this article, we’ll cover the pros and cons of both the diapers. Once you read them, you’ll understand why investing in disposable diapers is a good choice. Now, let’s begin with the debate!

Disposable Diapers

You can use disposable diapers once and trash them.

Many of us believe that disposable diapers have some disadvantages. Most parents remove the dirty diapers, lock them inside a Diaper Genies, and throw them in the weekly garbage. Then the diapers are buried inside a landfill where they take approximately 500 years to degrade.

In addition to waste, there are other environmental impacts of disposable diapers.

  • A disposable diaper is made from wood pulp and synthetic materials. The absorbent core consists of wood pulp and sodium polyacrylate, with an inner layer of polypropylene.

  • The manufacturing of wood pulp alone consumes a lot of water and creates additional waste that needs on-site treatment.

  • Most of the disposable diapers are bleached in the process to make them white.

But nowadays, it’s more of a myth that there aren’t any recycling options available for a disposable diaper. Researchers have found a way out through bamboo diapers.

Bamboo diapers: An eco-friendly alternative to conventional disposable diapers

Bamboo diapers are biodegradable and overcome most of the negative environmental impacts listed above. They can decompose in about 75 days, allowing parents the convenience of staying friendly to the Earth. Moreover, they are also gentle on your baby’s skin.

Here are the benefits of using disposable bamboo diapers.

  • More absorbent: Unlike cotton fabric, bamboo diapers absorb and retain nearly twice as much liquid according to the Indian Journal of Fibre & Textile.

  • Natural antibacterial and bacteriostatic: Bamboo fibers have the ability to fight bacterial infections and stop the growth of bacteria.

  • Hypoallergenic: Babies usually have sensitive skin and regular diapers might cause allergies. But bamboo diapers are safe in regards to this aspect. Your baby will also be protected from diaper rashes most of the time.

  • Chemical-free: Bamboo diapers are free from chlorine, alcohol, preservatives, latex, perfumes, lotions and phthalates. Due to advancements in technology, bamboo diapers are made using total chlorine-free (TCF) fluff pulp bleaching techniques.

Cons of disposable diapers
The only issue is the cost. Even though it’s expensive to buy them, the advantages can cover up this disadvantage.

Regular Cloth Diapers
Cloth diapers are made from cotton and they have three major drawbacks:

    1. Cotton is a thirsty crop and gallons of water are required to cultivate it. In addition, it is a pesticide-heavy crop.

    2. Cloth diapers consume modern parents’ precious time in this fast-paced world. These diapers have to be dried before reuse.

    3. Even if we ignore the above aspects, cloth diapers are less absorbent compared to the disposable ones. They won’t absorb your kid’s mess easily, leaving behind moisture on the skin.

Is there any advantage of cloth diapers?
Yes, they are cost-efficient. But we feel that the drawbacks listed above override this advantage. You will end up damaging the environment and your child’s skin while saving money.

Conclusion
We hope this article made things clear with respect to choosing diapers for your kids. Now you might know why it’s preferable to use disposable diapers over the cloth ones. In case you’re using cloth diapers for your little one, switch to disposable diapers without a second thought.

Happy parenting!
