A Quick Guide to Help with Teething Babies

As you would expect, the new growth and eruption of a baby’s first teeth can cause some serious discomfort. It’s simple enough to recognise that babies have a tough time during this period, but parents can do it tough as well, particularly if they don’t know how and when to help their baby during their teething. Whether it be finding remedies to sooth a baby’s aching gums, ways to anticipate teething milestones, or knowing whether or not what your baby is experiencing is normal, nothing might seem obvious or clear. To help parents navigate their baby’s teething time, we offer some background teething-related information in this blog to get you on the right path.

A quick introduction to teething

When your baby’s first teeth (its baby teeth) decide to appear will depend entirely on your child, and can range from birth to 27 months. So, with this in mind, you should know that there are no normal milestones for teething! What your friend or family member experienced with their baby is not necessarily what will happen with your own child, so there’s no need to panic if these experiences don’t match up. Although time might not matter too much, the order of the teeth does – front teeth should appear at around 9 months, while eye teeth should appear at 10 months, eye-adjacent teeth at 18 months and molars at around 27 months. Although this will be an uncomfortable time for your baby, there are a few ways you can help. Teething objects, such as Sophie the Giraffe, can help provide comfort for your baby as the chewing action helps to relieve a good deal of pain. For objects like this, it is recommended that you clean them regularly so that harmful bacteria does not accumulate.

Signs, symptoms and remedies for teething babies

If you’re trying to keep an eye on your baby’s gums to better anticipate when it is teething, there are a few things you can look out for. Physically, red, swollen gums, irritability and restlessness, flushed cheeks, fever, excessive salivation and finger or fist sucking are all signs that point towards your baby teething. Teething typically occurs over the course of eight days – this eight day period also includes a four day period prior to eruption and three days following the emergence of the tooth. In the event that you spot a blue-grey bubble on the gum where the tooth is about to emerge, there’s no need to be alarmed. This is an eruption cyst, and is a relatively common occurrence. This cyst will usually disappear without treatment. There are a few other things to help alleviate the pain that your baby experiences during teething, including gentle gum massage and, if that doesn’t work, pain relief (although make sure to consult your doctor beforehand).

Not too long now!

Even though teething can be a pain for children (and parents), this stage of development fortunately won’t last forever. By the age of three, the vast majority of children will have twenty baby teeth, making a full set of pearly whites. From the emergence of the first teeth, it’s important to look after your baby’s teeth, and when they’re a little bit older you should be teaching your children to exercise good dental hygiene. knowing whether or not what your baby is experiencing is normal, nothing might seem obvious or clear. To help parents navigate their baby’s teething time, we offer some background teething-related information in this blog to get you on the right path.  Just remember: after those first few teeth it’s going to be a breeze!
