5 Successful Women Scientists of India

In India its quite tough for a girl and a woman to do what she wants to do. But there are some legendary women who opted their career that they really want to peruse. Some of them opt sports, some opt politics, some opt acting and etc. There are some women who opted her career in science. Let’s discuss about them…

  1. Kalpana Chawla (Astronaut) – Kalpana Chawla born on 1 July, 1961 in Karnal, Haryana (India). She graduated from Tagore School, Karnal 1976. She did her bachelor in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College in 1982. She did her masters in aerospace engineering from university of Texas. She started her career in NASA Research Center in the Area of fluid dynamics. Kalpana Chawla was selected as astronaut candidate in the 15th group of astronauts. She went on STS-87(1997) and STS-107 (2003) and logged there 30 days, 14 hours, 54 minutes in space. While on the STS-107 she ended her life in an accident when Space Shuttle Colombia was entering prior before 16 minutes.

2. Ashmita Chatterjee – She was an organic chemistry scientist and made a huge contribution to this field. She was involved in the development of anti-epileptic. She was the second woman who was awarded the Doctorate of Science by an Indian university for the research on chemistry on plant and synthetic organic chemistry.

3. Tessy Thomas – Tessy Thomas an Indian scientist and Director of General of Aeronautical Systems. She is known as a “Missile Lady” of India. Because of her promising contribution in launching of Agni series of missiles. She was the project director of Agni-IV and Agni-V missiles in DRDO and also the first lady to head a missile project. She gets Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for her contribution.

4. Sunita Williams – She was born in Euclid on 19 September, 1965. She was educated from Needha High School, Needham, Massachusetts. She got the degree of bachelor of science in physical science from US Naval Academy. She did her masters in engineering management from Florida institute of technoloy in 1995. She was selected as an astronaut in NASA in 1998.

5. Anandi Bai Joshee – Dr. Anandi Bai Joshee was the first Indian physician. He was born on 31st march in 1865 in Kalyan, Maharashtra. Her husband played a vital role to her career. She went America where she applied for Women’s medical college of Pennsylvania. After it she returned to India and was appointed as physician-in-charge in Kolhapur at the female ward of Albert Edward Hospital.
