New Parents' Guide: How To Soothe a Teething Baby at Night

There is something about a teething baby fussing at night that sends many a new parent into a tailspin. It may be the combination of an upset baby and a lack of sleep, but whatever the reason, you could use some teething hacks for babies to get you through those long, difficult nights. These tips can help you soothe a cranky baby who is teething so you all can get some rest.

Stay the Course

For most babies, teething begins around three to six months of age. That’s also around the time that separation anxiety first surfaces, and the pair can make even the best sleepers turn into night howlers. Before you give into a demanding, fussy baby, remember that the teething stage does pass. There is no need to give up on the bedtime routine you have established because of a few rough nights. Children of all ages do better with routine, so try to stick with yours, even when your baby is irritable or uncomfortable. Consider adding a white noise machine or nightlight to the nursery to create a peaceful environment, and have faith that it will get better.

Massage Those Gums

Think about how massage reduces pain; it is all about increasing blood flow, which in turn can reduce inflammation. By gently massaging your teething baby’s gums, you may decrease any swelling and pressure, allowing your baby to relax and calm down. Use a clean finger, and switch between massaging and applying gentle pressure to see if it helps. The nice part is that you do not have to worry yet about getting bitten, although this tip may not work after the first couple of teeth.

Brave the Cold

Another common way to lessen inflammation and relieve pain is with anything cold. Keep a few spoons in the fridge to pop in your baby’s mouth when he or she is teething; your little one may enjoy gumming the cold metal. Another option is a damp, cold washcloth, because your babe can chew on it with abandon. A cool teething ring is also good; make sure any new teeth have not punctured it before you offer it to your baby. Even cold treats like a frozen banana or bagel can do the icy trick, but pay attention if he or she gums off a piece that could be a choking hazard.

Call for Backup

If any of these home remedies are not cutting it, you may want to try either an over-the-counter pain reliever or, better yet, an organic product, such as wellements teething oil. If you opt for ibuprofen or acetaminophen, check with the pediatrician first to make sure the dose is appropriate. What is nice about the teething oil is that it does not contain any potentially harmful ingredients that are found in some homeopathic teething products.

Teething is a milestone like all the rest, and you and your baby will survive this rough patch. Dig deep to find a little more patience, and arm yourself with lots of helpful advice. Stock up on essentials as well, things like extra teething rings, absorbent bibs, and wellements organic baby products. Once those baby teeth cut through, it will all be a distant memory.
