It often happens that freelancers, without realizing it, fall into the trap of the cycle: communicating with customers, fulfilling orders, making edits, monitoring exchanges, attracting new customers, communicating with them again, etc., dooming themselves for full time. The same office, only “in profile” and often – without days off.
At the initial stage, this is normal, but in an effort to control everything, the freedom-loving freelancer eventually acquires a stable “employer”, instead of building an asset. Therefore, first of all, decide who you are: an entrepreneur or a freelancer. And for this, let’s figure out how freelance differs from business and what needs to be done in order for your freelance to become an asset.
One thing for new freelancers is that start with stable and economy freelancing gigs to get some exposure and then even you can outsource your gigs to others and be an entrepreneur and start your business too.
1. What is the difference between freelance and business?
Freelance is a remote work that generates income only when a freelancer is involved in the processes. An asset, on the other hand, generates income, even if you are without a computer, without communication, or simply perform more priority tasks than work.
The goal of a freelancer is to earn money remotely. The goal of an entrepreneur is to earn money without working at all. The path to achieving the size of your assets, when they allow you to not work, is a complex and very lengthy process. But nevertheless, this is precisely the goal of every entrepreneur.
Freelancer processes are not tailored to automation. Business processes, in turn, are built with an emphasis on further automation.
A freelancer often does not perceive his activity as the main one and therefore does not feel a level of responsibility for his words.
An entrepreneur (in my ideal world) cannot afford to violate an agreement agreed with a client, and if he allows, then without compensation he offers compensation.
2. How to turn freelance into a business?
The desire to control everything and greed are two things that drive a freelancer into daily 8-10-hour slavery. You want to earn more, share less and know for sure that nobody will do this task better than you. This is a mistake because in order to earn more sometimes it is enough to change the strategy, and not to dig in more.
Sharing earned is a must if you want to develop further. And you will have to learn to find people whom you can trust in order to delegate tasks that, in your opinion, no one will do better than you.
3. The negative aspects of automation
The financial aspect. It is worth noting that after you assemble a team and automate the processes, freeing up time for yourself, your net income will decrease to 40-50% of the initial one, so you should not spend this time building illusion, but work on increasing the number of sales, create and automate new income channels.
Increased risk. As I said earlier, the desire to control everything is a problem. The balance is important. Highlight one day a week when you will review the correspondence of your team with the client, work performed and other parameters. By automating processes, you can lose vigilance and allow deviation from the generated instructions, which will lead to negative reviews and outflow of customers. Therefore, control, but in moderation.
Both in freelance and in business, the main value is technically borne by the client base and the main task of the entrepreneur is to increase it. The growth of the customer base and, accordingly, sales is possible only in the case of complete customer satisfaction and the provision of a five-star service. Therefore, in any case, the main key to success is the faithful implementation of the work entrusted to you.
In Conclusion – Everyone can do it
From my own experience, I was convinced that any person can create an automated income channel from scratch, regardless of the starting capital. Personally, I’m interested in building assets, I didn’t know what freelance would lead me to, but subconsciously I constantly automated and delegated everything. This is a matter of your personal choice. The main thing is to be happy!
